| Resumo | This work presents preliminary results of a comparison between numerical weather forecasts (NWF) of pressure fields operationally prepared by the U.S. National Meteorological Center (NMC) and by the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) for the northern Antarctic Peninsula region during December/93 and January-February/94 with actual weather conditions from Chilean Navy hand-drawn charts of weather analysis. Also used were images of polar orbiting meteorological satellites, and data from surface observations at the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF). Geographical locations and trajectories of low pressure centers and cold fronts In the NWF products In the 12 to 120 hours forecast range were the parameters used In the comparative study, since they are important in planning outdoor activities in the Antarctic Peninsula region. The results showed that for the twenty-one cases studied, only In three of them the NWFs gave a useful forecast, even considering the 12h range. Reasons for this low performance of the NmFs are indicated, in particular the lack of data in the southern austral oceans. |
